Abstract

El género Cryptococcus se presenta como levaduras globosas, elipsoidales o elongadas que se reproducen por gemación multilateral o polar. La mayoría de las especies presentan una cápsula polisacárida y algunas pueden presentar seudohifas o hifa verdadera.Están descriptas alrededor de 70 especies dentro del género Cryptococcus, donde la mayoría habita el suelo y no son patógenas para el ser humano. Las especies másfrecuentemente implicadas en enfermedades del hombre y otros animales son las del complejo C. neoformans/C. gattii,reservando el término criptococosis para las infecciones ocasionadas por estos agentes; si bien otras especies, tales como C. laurentii, C. albidus, C. adeliensis y C. curvatus, has sido encontradas causando patología en humanos.C. neoformans y C. gattii son levaduras capsuladas pertenecientes a la División Basidiomycota, Subdivisión Agaricomycotina, Clase Tremellomycetes, Orden Tremellales, Familia Tremellaceae. Ambas especies presentan fase sexuada. Estosteleomorfos pertenecen al género Filobasidiella, siendo F. neoformans el teleomorfo de C. neoformans y F. bacillispora el de C. gattii.
