Abstract

La planta de yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis A. St. Hil.) se conoció en Europa desde principios del siglo XIX y fue clasificada taxonómicamente entre 1818-1820 como Ilex theaezans Bonpl. ex Miers por Aimé Goujaud (médico y naturalista francés cuyo pseudónimo fue Amado Bonpland). Años más tarde (1823), el botánico francés Augustin de Saint Hilaire la describió definitivamente como Ilex paraguariensis (Giberti, 2011). El nombre genérico Ilex es una palabra griega que significa árbol espinoso, haciendo alusión a la hoja con margen espinoso de la especie tipo de la familia Aquifoliaceae, que es I. aquifolium L. o comúnmente conocido como acebo o muérdago de Navidad; por otra parte el epíteto específico paraguariensis es un gentilicio latinizado que hace referencia a su procedencia geográfica (i.e.: paraguayo) y que era utilizado por los antiguos historiadores españoles para denominar a las personas oriundas de Paraguay (Giberti, 1994). Tal denominación prevaleció sobre otras, las cuales pasaron a ser sinónimos, tales como Ilex mate A. St. Hil., I. curitibensis Miers, I. domestica Reissek, I. sorbilis Reissek, I. theaezans Bonpl. ex Miers (Giberti, 1994, 2008).
