El sistema de cuidados a largo plazo para personas mayores

Abstract

El proceso acelerado del envejecimiento poblacional que están atravesando los países de las Américas es un indicador sobre las presiones que se producirán en el sistema de cuidados a largo plazo para las personas adultas mayores. En efecto, se estima que a medida que las sociedades envejecen, aumentan las personas con dificultades para el desarrollo de sus actividades básicas e instrumentales de la vida diaria y que necesitarán ayuda para llevar adelante el cumplimiento de las mismas. En este sentido, los cambios al interior de las familias, producto de su verticalización, indican que habrá una disminución de la oferta informal de los servicios de cuidado con que tradicionalmente se contaba para el apoyo de las personas adultas mayores dependientes y concomitantemente una mayor presión social para que se concreten respuestas institucionales ante la dependencia.
