Abstract

This study shows an inventory of the greenhouse emissions for the City of Buenos Aires form years 1985 through 2005, based on the energy consumption. A sectoral and fuel description of the consumption is performed based on the material flow analysis methodology. The centralization of governmental, commercial and financial administration is inducing an increase in per capita energy consumption much higher than the country mean values, especially from the commercial and transport sector. Consequently the carbon emissions increased from 4 Mg/cap in 1985 to 8 Mg/cap in 2005. Comparatively Argentina has remained in 3.6 Mg/cap, while United States reaches 20 MG/cap. Instead, for example, cities like New York, Toronto or San Diego had increased their emissions per capita in the last 15 years. The consumption increase in cities and mega cities are pushing atmospheric emissions hardening the leveling of the global greenhouse emissions.
