Abstract

En el caso del Paraguay, las continuidades que se dieron con el paso de la colonia a la república se pueden vislumbrar claramente si analizamos la situación de los afrodescendientes, una población que en 1799 llegaba al 11% (entre esclavizados y libres); la ciudad de Asunción presenciaba que la mitad de su población estaba constituida por afrodescendientes. En distintos trabajos hemos abordado el tema de estas continuidades haciendo hincapié en la legislación, en la permanencia de la esclavitud hasta 1870 y en los mismos dispositivos de discriminación por parte de la sociedad. En esta oportunidad queremos centrarnos en el pueblo de Pardos Libres San Agustín de Emboscada creado a mediados del siglo XVIII y que permanece hasta hoy día. Queremos resaltar es que este pueblo fue organizado siguiendo la estructura administrativa de los pueblos de indios y con ella permaneció hasta 1870, incluso después de su extinción, en 1848. Para mediados del siglo XIX, en Emboscada vivía la tercera parte de todos los pardos libres del Paraguay. El objetivo es, entonces, mostrar no sólo su continuidad sino también su utilidad a la organización socioeconómica.
