Abstract

Los cursos de agua del Neotrópico que drenan paisajes selváticos de montaña despliegan una paleta abigarrada de formas de vida. Distintos factores de perturbación pueden incidir negativamente sobre este capital natural. A los fines prácticos del biomonitoreo, importa identificar taxones cuya presencia/ausencia sirvan para alertar sobre la incidencia crítica de agentes antrópicos de impacto. El Índice Biótico de las Yungas basado en 4 taxones (IBY-4) es útil para diagnosticar el “estado sanitario” de los ríos y arroyos de la región epónima. Se basa en la mera presencia de insectos bentónicos de la familia Elmidae, Coleoptera y de los órdenes Megaloptera, Plecoptera y Trichoptera. El IBY-4 logra aglutinar las siguientes cualidades: 1) es confiable, puesto que su especificidad y sensibilidad han sido estadísticamente testeadas en una base de datos que cubre toda la región de Yungas del NOA; 2) es práctico, porque no se requieren datos de abundancia ni alta resolución taxonómica durante la identificación; 3) es versátil, porque se basa en taxones sensibles a distintas manifestaciones de la perturbación antrópica. Un corolario de la sencillez extrema del IBY-4 es que puede ser implementado por niños, circunstancia que lo torna útil para programas de educación ambiental en escuelas.
