La vida en la Antártida un continente de tamaño semejante a América del Sur se concentra hoy marcadamente en una estrecha franja marina costera, que en verano tiene sitios libres de nieve, y en el inmediato mar circundante. Los invertebrados marinos que integran esa biota tienen características únicas que comenzaron a definirse hace unos 80Ma, durante el Cretácico tardío, momento en que la Antártida tenía un clima benigno, estaba cubierta de vegetación, y físicamente se encontraba unida a América del Sur, Australia y Nueva Zelanda.
