Abstract

Zuden 22 Kakteen, die 1753 von dem schwedischen Naturforscher Carl von Linné benannt wurden, gehört auch der Cactus ficus-indica, den wir heute als Opuntia ficus-indica kennen (Abb. 1 & 2). In Mexiko wurde diese Art wohl schon seit Jahrtausenden genutzt. Als Nutzpflanze, aber auch als Unkraut, ist die Art heute in vielen Ländern außerhalb der Neuen Welt zu finden. Obwohl sie schon so lange bekannt ist, wusste man lange nicht, wo sie ihren natürlichen Ursprung hat. Es gibt also einiges zu erzählen über O. ficus-indica, und das ist auch ein Grund, warum sie von der Deutschen Kakteen-Gesellschaft als „Kaktus des Jahres“ vorgeschlagen wurde.
