Abstract

El hígado está continuamente expuesto a una gran carga antigénica, que incluye patógenos, toxinas, células tumorales y antígenos de la dieta. La pérdida de la tolerancia contra antígenos propios puede resultar en el desarrollo de la hepatitis autoinmune. Actualmente, se plantea que el proceso autoinmune es desencadenado por factores desconocidos (infecciones, agentes químicos, fármacos), en un huésped genéticamente susceptible. El proceso está caracterizado por una hiperreactivad de los linfocitos T dirigidos contra antígenos propios del hígado, y por la presencia de autoanticuerpos. Se divide en dos tipos principales, de acuerdo con el perfil de autoanticuerpos presentes. En general, la respuesta al tratamiento inmunosupresor con esteroides y azatioprina es buena.
