Abstract

The Upper Miocene deposiTs of eastern cordillera, salta and Jujuy provinces. Stratigraphic and sedimentological characteristics of the Payogastilla and Orán Groups represent important tectono-sedimentary constraints on the evolution of the Andean foreland basin in northwestern Argentina. This study provides the results of the first integrated analysis of the Upper Miocene deposits in the Eastern Cordillera, northwestern Argentina. The deposits of the Upper Miocene of Payogastilla Group, in the Calchaquí basin, Palo Pintado Formation, are composed of accumulations of wandering fluvial systems with development of lakes and marshes in the floodplain. These fluvial systems have developed under tropical and subtropical climate conditions, during the 10 Ma at 5 Ma. To the east, during this time, was developed partially separated from the above, the basins of Lerma and Güemes, with a large distribution Guanaco Formation deposits. In these basins have developed extensive alluvial fans and braided fluvial systems. In the northern part of the study area, isolated from the above basins are developing Cianzo and Casa Grande-Tres Cruces basins, with deposits of Pisungo Formation. These deposits have a fluvial architecture features of proximal alluvial fans, denoting the provenance from Sierra Aguilar, Sierra Alta and Sierra de Tilcara.
