Semilla Sintética

Abstract

Resulta difícil tratar de determinar el origen de la idea de la producción de semillas sintéticas o artificiales. Es uno de los resultados de la aplicación en la Agricultura de los embriones somáticos descriptos por primera vez en 1958, por Jakob Reinert y por F.C. Steward y colaboradores. Sin embargo, un gran propulsor de su utilización para la propagación en gran escala de plantas fue Toshio Murashige quien en un Simposio realizado en 1977 en Ghent (Bélgica) presentó formalmente la idea de la producción de las semillas sintéticas, entendiendo como tal a un simple embrión somático encapsulado. Esta semilla se diferencia de la semilla verdadera en que el embrión es somático (producido por el fenómeno conocido como embriogénesis somática) y no cigótico y que si tiene endosperma y cubierta, éstos son artificiales. Esta semilla, puesta en condiciones adecuadas, germina y se convierte en una planta.
