Cadenas Globales de Valor y Desarrollo Económico

Abstract

The present article tries to analyze some theoretical and empirical contributions of the corpus of the “global chains of value” (GCV) to the study of economic development. First, the central conceptual elements of the GCV paradigm are reviewed, and then the central tendencies of the world economic geography in the GCV era are analyzed (emphasizing what happened since the 1990s). Finally it closes with some reflections about the insertion in GCV and the possibilities of development. As a main conclusion, we emphasize that the alternative is not “much or little insertion in the CGV” and, in any case, the challenge remains to avoid those forms of international insertion that promote impoverishing and exclusionary growth.
