De mares a bosques: patrimonio natural de Isla Guafo

Abstract

Isla Guafo, al igual que la Isla Grande de Chiloé, forma parte del sistema Cordillera de la Costa. Por ello, presenta una serie de cordones montañosos que llegan a alcanzar, en su breve espacio, alturas de hasta 306 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Esas montañas, que descienden abruptamente hacia el Océano Pacífico, han sido históricamente azotadas por las aguas y marejadas, las que a lo largo de las eras han configurado una impresionante y sobrecogedora topografía de abruptos acantilados, largas plataformas, gigantescas cuevas e islotes semi-sumergidos.El origen sedimentario de la isla, constituida por una masa de arcilla o fango endurecido, es claramente observable en los sectores expuestos por las mareas. En estas plataformas costeras, un estudio paleontológico reconoció un total de 34 especies de fósiles. Incluso se identificando 11 especies nuevas, la mayoría de las cuales todavía se conocen solamente en esta isla. Entre los fósiles observables destacan restos de ballenas y otros vertebrados marinos.
