El uso de fuentes renovables de energía continúa creciendo a un ritmo sostenido, aun en un contexto de fuerte descenso en los precios del petróleo. Se considera fuente de energía renovable a todo recurso natural inagotable en la escala humana o que se regenera más rápidamente de lo que se consume. Una de sus características es que es ambientalmente benigna ya que produce muy bajas emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, como dióxido de carbono (CO2).
