Multitud

Abstract

En el presente texto me propongo analizar la metáfora de la "multitud" empleada por Thomas Hobbes. Más concretamente, busco interrogar el modo en el que la invocación de la multitud contribuye a realizar una práctica política de exclusión. La particularidad de la metáfora hobbesiana radica en no referir al "pueblo bajo" sino a la muchedumbre heterogénea compuesta, bien por vanidosos aristócratas, bien por indignados campesinos. Ante lo cual, la lectura más arraigada afirma que la contraposición de la metáfora de la multitud con la de pueblo en De cive o la del soberano en Leviathan no solo alegorizan la unificación de las voluntades de la multitud en el pueblo o el soberano, sino también, y especialmente, "excluyen" la subjetividad política por fuera de los límites precisos de la "voluntad unitaria" del soberano representante.[...]A continuación procedo a desarrollar el argumento en los siguientes apartados. En el primero ("Elocuencia y autocensura") señalo que la incorporación del materialismo hobbesiano al análisis de la metáfora de multitud permite observar cómo toda exclusión involucra una forma de autocensura. Luego, en el segundo apartado ("Memoria, poder y acto") sostengo que esa inscripción del agente en un contexto de heteronomía crea las condiciones de posibilidad para la acción. Por último, en el tercer apartado ("Metáforas e interpretación") retomo la pregunta por la posibilidad de clausurar la interpretación de las metáforas. Lo cual, atendiendo a lo expresado en los apartados anteriores, supone indagar la posibilidad de clausurar o detener el sentido. Al efecto, indico cómo la denuncia del "absurdo" en Hobbes supone dicha operación, pero, al mismo tiempo el reconocimiento de su futilidad.
