Abstract

Examinando las barrancas de los ríos de alguna consideración que cruzan la provincia de Buenos Aires, se nota fácilmente que en algunos puntos, debajo de la capa de tierra vegetal, se presenta una capa de terreno bien definida, color gris ceniciento, que en algunos puntos degrada hasta un blanco algo obscuro. […]. Una primera particularidad que llama la atención, es que estos depósitos ocupan superficies de un espacio muy limitado. […]. Esta observación permite conocer que no se trata de lechos de antiguos ríos, puesto que en estos casos los estratos son continuados sin interrupción siguiendo el curso de las antiguas corrientes. Observando con más atención, se nota que estos depósitos ocupan especies de bajos o depresiones que presentaba en un tiempo en su superficie el terreno pampeano, pero se rellenaron más tarde con el terreno ceniciento en cuestión. Esto permite suponer que esas depresiones estuvieron ocupadas por las aguas, que fueron bañados y lagunas que se han cegado poco a poco y han desaparecido, como se ciegan y desaparecen las lagunas actuales de la misma región (Ameghino, 1887).
