Abstract

Los equinodermos (ekhinos, erizo; derma, piel) comprenden un grupo exitoso de organismos exclusivamente marinos conocidos vulgarmente como estrellas de mar, ofiuras, erizos de mar, pepinos de mar y lirios de mar. Estos presentan, en su gran mayoría, hábitos bentónicos y se distribuyen desde ambientes intermareales hasta fondos profundos y en diferentes latitudes. Presentan características anatómicas únicas entre los invertebrados, entre ellas podemos citar una simetría radial pentámera secundaria, puesto que en muchas especies sus larvas poseen simetría bilateral. Los equinodermos carecen de una cabeza definida, por lo tanto se identifica en general una zona oral, donde se halla ubicada la boca y una zona opuesta denominada aboral que suele estar en contacto con el sustrato.
