Abstract

This work analyzes the mapuche, tehuelche and western society contact processes through photographs taken in Patagonia from the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Our purpose is to assess the social practices and incorporation of foreign material culture by these groups, in order to analyze and compare their contact processes with the early Argentinian state. We followed the perspective of “visual archaeology”, which considers photographs as cultural artifacts that contain information about the photographed subjects and their material culture, as well as about the photographer. We analyzed 521 photographs, assessing clothes, ornaments and artifacts manipulated by the photographed ones; because we consider they depict the coexistence of indigenous and western elements, thus pointing out to the contact process. We consider there existed mayor negotiations and resistences to the western advance, but the mapuche people seemed to have adopted mayor western practices and material culture than the tehuelche people.
