Abstract

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) causes several clinical syndromes in cattle. Like other alpha-herpesviruses, the life cycle of BoHV-1 can be divided in three stages: acute infection, latency and reactivation. During acute infection, BoHV-1 expresses a highly regulated cascade of genes. However, during latency, the expression of viral genes is restricted to the latency-related gene (LR gene) and ORF-E. The LR gene is polyadenilated and undergoes alternative splicing, giving rise to a family of proteins. In this review, the properties of the LR gene are analyzed in relation to the inhibition of viral immediate-early genes, the cell cycle, interferon response, apoptosis, infiltration of mononuclear cells in trigeminal ganglion, interaction with C/EBP-α and latency in lymphoid tissue. Briefly, the most recent findings on ORF-E are described.
