Abstract

This paper aims to examine the ways in which the emergence of fan cultures responds to the logic of postmodernism and processes of media convergence. In order to outline some answers, we will revisit my own empirical and qualitative ethnographic research on a particular manga/anime fan community, which has become very visible in Argentina in recent years: these fans are the otakus, young women and young men from different social sectors who are involved in the consumption of Japanese comics and animation. On the basis of this study, we will reflect on the cultural experiences of identity and community that are linked to fandoms in contemporary societies, distinguished by an alleged fragmentation and the articulation of both traditional and digital media.
