Vulnerabilidad de ecosistemas marinos costeros a contaminantes orgánicos persistentes : panorama actual e histórico

Abstract

It is estimated that 60% of the world’s population lives no more than 60 km from the coast, and that proportion will reach 75% within the next 30 years. While the world situation is enveloped in levels of alarm and action, both developed and developing countries accumulate inconveniences due to a lack of financial means, management experts, and more. In this context, the presence, transport and distribution of persistent organic pollutants has given priority to both the protection of the oceans, and to the reduction and elimination of emissions and discharges of organohalogen compounds and other Persisten Organic Pollutants (pops) (unep). Facing this scenario, this chapter addresses current regulations concerning pops that have been deemed priority, in addition to the revision of regulatory and non-regulatory guide levels of international reference for case studies selected from South American shores.
