This paper seeks to analyze the revolts in the Arab world from a point of view that challenges the interpretation that has established analogies between them and the European Revolutions that took place between 1989 and 1990, and between the latter and the Iranian Revolution of 1979. We hold that such interpretations are instances of a type of historical analysis which Foucault called “total history”, which aims at finding continuities in history. Thus, the critical activity focuses on how the two “spirits” of history which have made use of these accounts: liberal democracy and the Islamic threat. Our goal is to analyze the European revolutions of 1989-1990 and the 1979 Islamic Revolution in order to establish possible comparisons with the current Arab revolts.
