Abstract

En el mundo existen más de veinte mil especies de abejas. Forman un grupo de insectos voladores de tamaño variable -entre unos 2mm y unos 4cm de largo-,cercanamente emparentado con las avispas y las hormigas, que los entomólogos denominaron Apiformes. Considerando su filogenia, es decir, el origen y la evolución de la especie, se habla de las Anthophila. Hoy viven en cuanto lugar existan plantas con flores, proveedoras de polen, aceites y néctar a insectos polinizadores, es decir, en todos los continentes menos la Antártida. Se las clasifica en siete familias, a saber: Melittidae, Andrenidae, Colletidae, Stenotritidae, Halictidae, Apidae y Megachilidae.Las abejas más conocidas son las que proporcionan la miel de consumo generalizado, llamadas europeas, domésticas o melíferas (Apis mellifera). Son parte de uno de los muchos grupos de la familia de las ápidas, la cual abarca unas 5700 especies diferentes. Otro grupo de ápidas recibe el nombre de meliponas, el que se aplica a unos 32 géneros (uno de estos es Melipona), con más de 500 especies.
