Depressão geriátrica e suporte social percebido

Abstract

The aging population that exists today is an indisputable reality that is increasingly common knowledge. Although depressive symptoms may not be apparent, many older people are currently suffering from various types of depression, from mild to severe, and this fact is related to several factors characteristic of this age, including loss and loneliness and a low support and social support. The main objective of this study was to analyze the association between geriatric depression and perceived social support. The sample included 58 patients of both sexes goers homes, on a day care and inpatient settings. After obtaining informed consent from participants and verification of sample inclusion criteria were applied the following evaluation measures: a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Scale of Satisfaction with Social Support. It was conclude with this research that the levels of geriatric depression are associated with perception of satisfaction with social support. There are statistically significant differences (p <.05) in the perception of satisfaction with social support between levels of depression, statistically significant differences between the three categories of depression (p <.05) in the perception of satisfaction with friends, the perception of intimacy and the perception of satisfaction with family, which is not true (p ≥ .05) between classes of depression in perception of satisfaction with social activities. Thus, it is concluded that the level of depression statistically influence the perceptions of satisfaction. It is understandable therefore that social support becomes essential for the psychological well-being of the elderly, being a protective factor for the development of depression.
