Architecture and the 'Poleogenetic' Function of Salonika's Synagogues

Abstract

Questo contributo muove da una domanda: che rapporto c’è tra l’architettura e i fenomeni insediativi? Il tema in esame è quello delle antiche sinagoghe di Salonicco, distrutte nel grande incendio che ha raso al suolo la città nell’agosto 1917. Ne è seguita una ricostruzione urbana che ha mirato a cancellare ogni traccia della città preesistente: nel tracciato delle principali strade come nelle preesistenze monumentali che testimoniavano la “cittadinanza multietnica” del periodo ottomano. L’importanza di uno studio delle sinagoghe perdute di Salonicco è legata al fatto che molti questi edifici risalivano al periodo dell’insediamento degli ebrei cacciati dalla Spagna e dal Portogallo, e testimoniavano concretamente le diverse tradizioni liturgiche, artistiche, e architettoniche delle comunità originarie. Tutto ciò a fronte di dibattito, ancora in corso, sull’importanza o meno dell’architettura come fatto identitario per queste stesse comunità.
