Abstract

Desde la época de Platón, el hombre ha buscado métodos mediante los cuales los cálculos basados en conjuntos de reglas puedan ser automatizados. La razón es muy sencilla: los procedimientos que se realizan en base a instrucciones ya establecidas generalmente son rutinarios y sin reto alguno; en la búsqueda continua del progreso no es admisible sufrir retrasos debido a cuestiones operativas. Por otro lado, imaginémonos por un momento lo que sucedería si por alguna razón el hombre hubiera decidido no buscar la automatización de sus procesos. Supongamos que se hubiera conformado con asignarle éstos a un subconjunto de la humanidad; por ejemplo, a los más pobres, o a los que no tuvieran el poder en sus manos. El resultado de esto sería una sociedad en la cual 1) el nivel de desarrollo no podría ser comparable al actual, pues hoy en día las máquinas son más rápidas y exactas que una multitud de personas trabajando 24 horas al día 365 días al año, y 2) la sociedad sufriría una separación definitiva, en la cual la clase dominante viviría a expensas de las personas meramente "operativas", las cuales jamás disfrutarían el fruto de su trabajo. Un ejemplo claro y patente de esta situación la podemos ver en el filme futurista "Metrópolis" (1925, Fritz Lang)
