Abstract

El uso de recursos naturales sin medidas que minimicen el impacto al medio ambiente y la actividad económica en general en un país provoca problemas de desarrollo, tales como el cambio climático, desintegración de ecosistemas y biodiversidad, migración de la población y reducción en la disponibilidad de los recursos naturales. En 1972, la primera Conferencia de Naciones Unidas para la Sociedad y el Ambiente en Suecia, mencionó que el principal contaminante en el ambiente es la pobreza (Gandhi, 1972. Gro Harlem Brundtland definió por primera vez el concepto de Desarrollo Sostenible. Desarrollo Sostenible, es satisfacer las necesidades de las generaciones presentes, sin comprometer la capacidad de las generaciones futuras para satisfacer sus propias necesidades (Brundtland, 1987). En el 2002 durante la Cumbre Mundial para el Desarrollo Sostenible (WSSD, 2002) en Johannesburgo donde se mencionó como uno de sus principios fundamentales, la necesidad en los cambios en los modelos de producción y consumo por modelos sostenibles (Jiménez, 2002) se visualizó al Consumo Sostenible, como una herramienta fundamental para el Desarrollo Sostenible. En 1975, se realizó el primer seminario en "Mercadotecnia Ecológico"; organizado por la Asociación Americana de Mercadotecnia (American Mercadotecnia Association, AMA) con un enfoque de consumo/producción sostenible.
