Nuevos “extranjeros” y nuevos miedos las barreras culturales y estructurales para la juventud trabajadora rumana en Londres

Abstract

En los últimos años, la atención política se ha centrado crecientemente en el tema de la inmigración en el Reino Unido. Mientras que algunos comentaristas atribuyen características más positivas a estos movimientos poblacionales, tales como el enriquecimiento de la cultura y los beneficios económicos, otros temen que los jóvenes de otros países podrían corromper un sistema social bien establecido y llegar a sustraer del estado sus recursos financieros, así como sobrecargar su sistema penal de justicia. Antes de la supresión de las restricciones laborales para la población rumana produjeron varias olas de inmigración al Reino Unido (UK), la mayoría con la participación de otros jóvenes emigrantes económicos procedentes de Europa central y oriental. Las restricciones, sin embargo, se mantuvieron para los trabajadores rumanos y búlgaros se temió que miles de ellos acudiesen en masa al Reino Unido en busca de trabajo. Es el potencial de este movimiento poblacional lo que ha provocado un gran revuelo político sobre “la invasión de gitanos sospechosos”, “redes de crimen organizado”, y la probabilidad de que aquellos que lleguen sean “gorrones beneficiados” por las prestaciones y ayudas del sistema.
