Abstract

The purpose of this master's thesis has been to develop a teacher's guide providing primary school teachers support in teaching about traditional preservation methods for raw materials derived from hunting and fishing. The thesis is motivated by the need for educational resources that integrate traditional knowledge and sustainable resource use into practical and interdisciplinary science education, aligned with the overarching goals of the Norwegian curriculum (LK20). This thesis represents a developmental project rooted in educational design research, where the resource was developed through two design cycles. The initial version of the teacher’s guide was created based on literature, curriculum standards, and personal experiences. Subsequently, the resource underwent evaluation in two cycles involving informants with professional knowledge and experience from schools and teacher education, utilizing semi-structured interviews. Feedback from these evaluations informed further refinements to content and structure. The completed teacher’s guide includes suggested teaching activities, reflective questions, and professional background information for teachers. The activities emphasize outdoor education and exploratory learning, closely tied to the interdisciplinary theme of sustainable development and learning objectives in science, food and health, social studies, and religious and ethical education (KRLE). By integrating practical activities, academic reflection, and interdisciplinary perspectives, the resource supports deep learning, enabling students to explore concepts and relationships over time and apply their knowledge in authentic and real-world contexts. Evaluation results indicate that informants found the resource relevant and practical. It is viewed as contributing to increased sustainability awareness within schools and simplifying the integration of local food culture and practical work into classroom instruction. The thesis demonstrates how traditional knowledge and pedagogical principles can be effectively combined to develop supportive educational materials.
