Abstract

This master's thesis is a qualitative study that has examined whether there is anything that can be changed in the educational system to better prepare students with intellectual disabilities for a life of work after completing their education. Accordingly, I have analyzed several political documents that each shed light on the extent to which there has been an effort to promote employment for this target group, as well as previous research on the subject, which provides an indication of how successful these efforts have been. Additionally, I have analyzed literature that describes the experiences adults with intellectual disabilities have regarding their own work situations, as well as job advertisements that give an idea of the types of tasks these individuals can expect to encounter in their future workplaces. This way, I have been able to identify which skills are most important for this group of people. I later discuss whether it is possible, or desirable, to focus more on developing these skills in school — even at the expense of traditional academic subjects. After addressing the research question using the data material and existing legislation, I have concluded that it may be possible to introduce vocational training as a separate subject from lower through upper secondary school for students with intellectual disabilities.
