Vold mot Helsepersonell

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Currently, around 700 healthcare personnel are subjected to workplace violence (1). Violence and aggression towards employees in home care services is a growing problem, leading to both physical and psychological consequences for the employees and the overall service. This bachelor's project will examine how healthcare personnel in home care services experience violence in their daily work. The project intends to raise awareness regarding the topic and illuminate the healthcare workers perspectives and experiences regarding violence. Method This project is a collaboration between the nursing education program at NTNU and the municipal healthcare services. A qualitative method was chosen for this project by using in-depth interviews with two nurses and two health care workers. A qualitative approach was selected to gain better insight regarding the informants´ experiences and perspectives. The project is inspired by this information and Malterudś methods was used to systematically analyze the interviews (2). The interviews were conducted by two nursing students in April 2025. Results The informants in homecare services are exposed to both physical and psychological violence. This is particularly common when interacting with users affected by dementia, psychiatric conditions, or substance abuse. Definitions of violence among the informants show many similarities, however there is a variation regarding the interpretation of violence. The informants handle the violent situations by remaining calm, following established procedures, and documenting the incidents afterwards. However, the events are not always reported. There is a need for more training, education, and faster implementation of appropriate necessary measures. Conclusion The findings of this thesis reveal similarities in how the informants define violence, although it is understood and experienced differently. There is potential for improvement in ensuring that all incidents are reported, regardless of severity. The management has room for improvement in implementing measures more promptly after incidents are reported. The documentation system could also be improved by developing a more systematic structure. The informants express a clear need and desire for more thorough training and education on the topic. There is also a need to establish clearer definitions of what constitutes violence and what should or should not be reported. This is essential for creating a shared understanding within the department.
