Engasjement i utvidet klasserom

Abstract

This master's thesis examines how students express engagement during museum visits. The study is based on the theory of the “extended classroom”, where the museum is considered an important learning arena. Engagement is understood as a multidimensional phenomenon, consisting of cognitive, behavioral, emotional and social engagement. The purpose of the study is to provide insight into how students engage with museum education, and what forms of expression this takes. Through a combined method, both quantitative and qualitative data were collected with structured observation of school classes from 7th and 8th grade during museum visits. The findings show that engagement during museum visits is not always as evident. Engagement can manifest itself in a wide range of ways, and can, for example, be expressed through curiosity, emotions, physical behavior and social interaction. Students can also display all, several, one or none of the four dimensions of engagement. The paper concludes that museums have great potential as learning arenas in science, especially when visits are well integrated into teaching. The results have implications for both teachers and museum staff, pointing to the importance of good preparation and student activity to promote engagement and curiosity.

Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvordan elever uttrykker engasjement under museumsbesøk. Funnene viser at engasjement under museumsbesøk ikke alltid kommer like tydelig fram.
