Summary Title: What factors promote and hinder inclusive working life for people with intellectual disability? Introduction: People with intellectual disability often end up outside the mainstream working life, and are granted disability benefits upon graduating from upper secondary school. In working life, there are often high demands on functional ability, which contributes to a significant gap between the individual’s abilities and the expectations of the job. This means that people with intellectual disabilities often do not have the opportunity to work on an equal footing with others. The role of the social worker then becomes to facilitate participation and support the opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to work. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to investigate factors that both promote and hinder inclusive working life for people with intellectual disabilities. This is to provide the social worker with increased knowledge about how to facilitate participation and inclusion of working life for people with developmental disabilities. Method: In this thesis, a literature study is used as a method, based on five peer-reviewed research articles obtained through a systematic literature search. As well as other additional literature to answer the task. Result: The data collection refers to the design of the work initiative and the subjective opinions of people with intellectual disabilities about factors that promote and hinder inclusion in working life. Promoting factors refer to adapted work tasks, with the opportunity to develop one’s own skills, as well as care and supportive work culture. Inhibiting factors refer to system challenges and ambivalent attitudes, including disagreement about distribution of responsibilities and resources for people with intellectual disabilities. Conclusion: The literature study concludes with extraneous factors such as facilitation, care, support, coping, variety and appropriate work tasks for people with intellectual disabilities. Inhibited factors are expressed through Nav and the workplace’s lack of knowledge and experience, as well as ambivalent and paternalistic attitudes. This results in system failure and reduces the possibility of people with intellectual disabilities to participate in working life.
