Abstract

Thesis statment: How can art contribute to societal inclusion for people with learning disabilities? Introduction/background: Inclusion is one of the dimensions necessary for integration into society. The inclusion of people with learning disabilities has for a long time been a challenge. There are a variety of tools that can be used, but art as a resource for inclusion at the societal level remains relatively under-researched. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to raise awareness among social educators about how art can serve as a resource in their professional practice. In particular it explores how art can help reduce social exclusion. This is important for social educators, as well as health and social care workers, to gain insight into how theatre can be used beyond therapy, education and didactics. Method: This thesis is bases on a litteraturstudy, where all the texts are peer reviewed articles based on qualitative methodology. Additional academic literature has been used as supplement. Result: Art in itself is not enough to break down stigma and change societal attitudes. Factors such as public exhibition and a valued role in society are necessary for both individuals with learning disability and the public to reconsider their attitudes towards artists with learning disabilities. Conclusion: People with learning disabilities are subjected to stimatization. Through public display of art they can attain socially valued roles that break down stigma and promote inclusion in society. Keywords: art, learning disability, inclusion, normalization, stigma and quality of life.

Antall ord: 7505
