Abstract

Background: The scope of intimate partner violence is vast, both nationally and internationally. This violence has significant consequences and is considered a serious societal issue. This thesis presents theories on treatment programs available nationally and internationally, the transtheoretical model, and research that highlights how treatment for perpetrators can affect their violent behaviour. Purpose: The purpose is to examine how support systems can assist individuals who perpetrate intimate partner violence by facilitating a change process that can influence their violent behaviour, considering the significant consequences for both individuals and society. Method: The study employs a qualitative research method. Seven individual interviews were conducted with therapists who work with the treatment of individuals who perpetrate intimate partner violence. The material was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Discussing violence and violent acts contributes to increased awareness of the actions committed by perpetrators. Recognizing and taking responsibility for the violence problem is described as crucial for the change process. Perpetrators work to better understand themselves and their partners, for example, by becoming familiar with their own reaction patterns, working on the physical aspects of the body and bodily signals, and developing the ability to mentalize. Systemic challenges, such as legal proceedings, custody disputes, or obligations to report and avert violence, can affect treatment. The therapist's approach is a critical component of the treatment process. Conclusion: The study demonstrates how treatment for perpetrators can contribute to their change process in multiple ways. The study also highlights challenges in treatment, both at individual and societal levels. Keywords: intimate partner violence, mental health, mental health work, treatment for perpetrators, transtheoretical model, domestic violence
