Risikovurdering i svømme- og livredningsopplæring

Abstract

In Norwegian schools, swimming and lifesaving are important components of physical education (PE), where all students need to acquire lifesaving skills. This master’s thesis explores PE teachers’ practices and how this shape and constrain their swimming and lifesaving lesson. The theoretical framework of this study is the theory of practice architectures and a simplified document analysis. The theory of practice architectures contributes to an understanding of how practice is shaped within the interplay of cultural-discursive, material-economic and social-political arrangements. The simplified document analysis contributes with an overview and a nuanced interpretation of selected public documents that teachers must deal with. The database consists of qualitative interviews with four PE teachers at secondary school, who all teach swimming and lifesaving. These interviews are all analysed with reflexive thematic analysis procedures, where the themes are categorized into the arrangements from the theory of practice architectures. Results shows that cultural-discursive factors about safety and the feeling of own competence have an influence on PE teachers’ priorities, where the teachers feel competent, but outdoor teaching is experienced as riskier. Material-economic factors, such as number of students and access to aquatic areas, shows that PE teachers refer to previous regulations with a maximum of 15 pupils, and that they experience better access to outdoor aquatic areas. The results also show that social-political factors, such as responsibility, public documents and cooperation with parents, indicate that PE teachers are aware of the legal responsibility in risk and safety management, but that the personal feeling of responsibility has the biggest impact. This study shops that PE teachers’ practice in swimming and lifesaving lessons is a complex composition of different factors which affect each other and create a whole. PE teachers must balance between safety, responsibility and pedagogy, and the conclusion points out a need for better support to PE teachers, and professional development in swimming and lifesaving lessons in Norwegian schools.
