Many young people feel that their lives lack meaning and experience little sense of purpose in their school activities (Reber, 2019). Experiencing meaning in life is associated with higher motivation and increased effort (Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2015). The purpose of this study is to explore how students experience outdoor education as a meaningful activity in physical education. To shed light on the issue, the perspective on meaningful physical education by Beni et al. (2017) was used. While there are many research articles on meaningful experiences in physical education, there are not many connected to outdoor education, especially in a Norwegian context. This study therefore seeks to fill that knowledge gap. The qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with six 10th grade students. Braun & Clarke’s (2022) reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The most prominent finding was the importance of the social dimension. The results indicate that shared outdoor experiences are more meaningful and that the social interaction between students is more meaningful outdoors. Additionally, the findings indicate that students view challenges and mastering those as meaningful. Nature can also serve as a sanctuary for the students, offering them a mental break while also promotes mindfulness. The results also indicate that nature can be an arena for meaningful learning. Teachers can promote meaningfulness in their teaching by focusing on a democratic approach that encourages both co-determination and self-determination among students.
