Abstract

This master's thesis examines how teachers facilitate increased reading motivation in multilingual boys at primary school. The study is based on the need for a better understanding of which pedagogical measures and strategies can contribute to promoting reading pleasure and reading motivation in multilingual boys. The main research question is: How can teachers facilitate increased reading motivation in multilingual boys at primary school? The study has a qualitative approach and is based on semi-structured group interviews with four teachers who teach multilingual pupils at primary school. The data from the interviews are analysed thematically based on these sub - questions: What experiences do teachers have with using regular reading hours to increase reading pleasure in multilingual boys? How do teachers facilitate book selection in multilingual boys and what experiences do teachers have with the use of bilingual books? What experiences do teachers have with involving parents to promote pupils' reading motivation? The findings show that teachers emphasise adapted reading instruction, interest-based literature, and varied reading activities to strengthen pupils' motivation. Silent reading is particularly highlighted as a measure to establish good reading habits and contribute to increased reading motivation. At the same time, the participants talk about challenges related to pupils' concentration during silent reading and the need for more structured follow-up of reading sessions. The teachers emphasise that silent reading sessions alone are not sufficient, and that the measure works best when combined with guidance, reflection, and conversations about the books the pupils have read. Interaction between pupils and teachers through reading aloud and reading conversations appears to be important factors in maintaining reading motivation and reading engagement. The study shows that bilingual books can contribute to increased reading engagement and that the school library can be an arena that can offer a varied selection of books that appeal to pupils' interests, linguistic background, and cultural experiences. In addition, teachers point out the importance of parental involvement in supporting pupils' reading development to promote reading enjoyment and motivation. The study's findings indicate that a holistic pedagogical approach – which includes adapted reading instruction, systematic integration of silent reading and the library, as well as active interaction and structured collaboration between school and home – can promote increased reading motivation in multilingual boys in primary school.
