Abstract

The topic of this thesis is teaching local history. The thesis question to be researched is: “How do social studies teachers use museums as learning arenas in teaching local history?”. This study examines how social studies teachers use museums into their teaching of local historical topics. Interviews were conducted with three social studies teachers to gain insight into their perspectives and experiences with this theme. This was done using qualitative semi-structural interviews. During the interviews, questions were asked regarding their definition and understanding of local history, how they teach local historical topics, how they use museums in teaching, and their reflections on using museums to teach local history. The main findings of this research are presented through the answers to the study’s research questions. The results show that local history is not actively used in social studies teaching, as it is not explicitly mentioned in the LK20 curriculum. The teachers’ understanding of local history aligns somewhat with theoretical perspectives but also reveals a partial lack of clarity about its full scope. The findings also indicate that teachers perceive that students develop identity and historical awareness through local history teaching, which is consistent with previous research. The use of museums in social studies teaching provides similar opportunities and learning experiences as highlighted in existing literature; however, the extent of museum use varies depending on time, resources, and the school’s capacity. Nevertheless, the teachers agree with previous research in that museum visits help foster the development of historical empathy among students. These main findings are used to answer the thesis question. The research project provides new knowledge and understanding of local history. Based on the findings of this study, further research on this topic is recommended. Local history has great potential within social studies education, and through a shared understanding of the concept, it can once again become an active and valuable theme in the classroom.
