Deltakelse i kroppsøving

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study is to investigate how physical education teachers experience and deal with low participation in the subject. The study is based on a qualitative approach where five physical education teachers at two secondary schools were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The data I collected was analyzed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis. My theoretical basis deals with the theory of practice architecture, and in the discussion, I discuss my findings against the theory and previous research. Based on the theory of practice architecture, the findings have been viewed against cultural-discursive, material-economic and socio-political conditions. The results of the study show that physical education teachers express that students experience different challenges and conditions when encountering the subject of physical education. Furthermore, the results show how relationships and safety in the learning environment are central to facilitating increased participation. It also emerges that content and facilitation in teaching are important for participation. Finally, the results show how external frameworks can be experienced as practical limitations for physical education teachers. In light of the theory of practice architecture, it may indicate that students' participation in physical education is related to how practices are shaped and are shaped by the environments they are part of. This indicates that teaching practices are influenced by how the teacher talks about the subject, what is done in practice, and which relationships contribute to shaping the learning environment.
