Tvang i psykisk helsevern

Abstract

Title: Coercion in mental health care Keywords: Coercion, reduce, measures, mental health care Background: Coercion in mental health care is common in Norwegian healthcare, especially young adults. Based on the high use of coercion and in which this can affect the patients, we want to identify therapeutic, evidencebased nursing measures that can reduce the use of coercion in mental health care. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to explore how nurses can contribute to reducing use of coercive measures through the implementation of research-based preventive measures. Research problem: What measures can nurses implement to reduce the use of coercion in mental health care? Method: We have used a literature study with findings of quantitative and qualitative research articles, and a review article. Pubmed and Cinahl have been used as databases and structured searches were used. This resulted in nine articles that we saw as relevant. Results: After a thematic analysis, we concluded with three main themes: Relationship building, environment, and training and knowledge. Conclusion: The findings highlight the importance of nursing measures, like relationship building, environment, and training and knowledge. Implementing measures that strengthen these factors can contribute to a significant reduction in coercion for nurses in psychiatric wards.
