Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore nurses' experiences working with patients with substance use disorders (SUD) in hospital settings, from a nursing perspective. This was done by focusing on the challenges and opportunities in dealing with this patient group. Method: This is a systematic literature study based on four qualitative and two quantitative research articles, and one review article. The articles were found by doing a systematic search in the databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed and Medline. Results: Through this study we ended up with two themes. Nursing competance and nurses' attitudes. Most of the included articles confirm that nurses often hold preconceived negative attitudes toward patients with SUD. Nurses felt unprepared and unsure when working with this patient group. Conclusion: This study confirms that nurses often approach hospitalized patients with SUD with negatively charged attitudes, which affects the quality of nursing care provided. Many nurses feel usure, unsafe and afraid of being manipulated when caring for these patients. Our study concludes that increased understanding, education, and knowledge about addiction are key factors in improving confidence and enhancing the level of care provided to this patient group.
