Ungdom bak makten

Ungdom bak makten

Abstract

This thesis explores the research question: "How does the use of power and coercion affect young people and their relationships with caregivers in child welfare institutions?", with particular emphasis on the perspectives of the youth themselves. It examines how institutional frameworks and the application of power and coercion can undermine fundamental needs such as safety, trust, and relational connection. The thesis highlights how such practices may create a sense of insecurity, undermine trust, and increase emotional distance between young people and caregivers. Based on theories of relational competence, trauma-informed care, and the window of tolerance, the discussion emphasizes the importance of safety and emotional regulation support as key elements in young people’s development. The analysis suggests that staff must maintain a high level of awareness regarding their own power dynamics and prioritize alternatives to coercion such as communication, trust-building, and emotional support. By centering the voices and lived experiences of the youth, the thesis offers valuable insights into how child welfare institutions can reduce the use of power and coercion, while fostering stronger, more supportive relationships between young people and their caregivers. Furthermore, it underscores the need for critical reflection and a professional child welfare approach that places the experiences and well-being of young people at the core
