Ensomhet og eldre

Abstract

Nøkkelord: Ensomhet, eldre, sykehjem, sykepleier-pasient relasjon, forebygging

Title: Loneliness and elderly Background: Providing care in a dignified, respectful, and holistic manner is a central to the nurse’s role. Nevertheless, the psychosocial needs of nursing home (NH) residents are often deprioritized. This may weaken their sense of identity and reduce the quality of relational care. Preventing loneliness through relational nursing is therefore an important aspect of elderly care. Research question: How can nurses contribute to preventing loneliness among older residents in NHs? Aim: To explore how nurses can help prevent loneliness among elderly NH residents and examine how loneliness affects quality of life (QoL) and health. Method: A systematic literature review based on seven research articles, conducted between March to May 2025. Results: Loneliness is widespread among older NH residents and can have serious consequences for both physical and mental health. Studies show that relational care, person-centered approaches, and social interaction are essential for promoting joy of life and reducing loneliness. Nurse-patient relationships, meaningful contact, and activity are highlighted as key to improving QoL. Conclusion: Relational care, nature contact, and music therapy are important measures to prevent loneliness. The nurse’s responsibility is grounded in ethical principles, legislation, and professional guidelines. Key words: Loneliness, elderly, nursing homes, nurse-patient relationship, preventive measures
