Abstract

Background: Violence and threats are an increasing problem that affect both health and well-being in the workplace. Despite the requirements placed on organizations and employers, healthcare personnel often feel inadequately supported and followed up after incidents of violence and threats in their work environment. These incidents have significant health consequences at both the individual and societal levels. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to explore how healthcare personnel in municipal mental health and addiction services experienced incidents of violence and threats, along with their experiences related to support and follow-up. We aimed to amplify the voices of healthcare personnel and highlight the consequences these experiences have for the individuals, the services, and society. Method: Our study utilizes a qualitative research design, employing semi-structured interviews with a total of five informants from mental health and addiction services across various municipalities. The analysis was conducted using simplified thematic analysis. Results: Several individuals have been subjected to serious incidents of violence and threats. Healthcare personnel experienced many strong emotions and reactions. Support and care from colleagues were crucial. There was a significant difference in how they were followed up and cared for by management. Effective daily routines were present in the work environment, and the police provided valuable help and security. Informants reported that tolerance for violence and threats had increased, and boundaries had been pushed too far. Conclusion: The study highlights a significant challenge within the healthcare system. There is a need for measures to improve the mental health of healthcare personnel and to develop clearer procedures for support and follow-up after incidents of violence and threats. Keywords: Violence, threats, healthcare personnel, mental health, follow-up, care, managers, colleagues.
