Inkludering i skole gjennom idrett

Abstract

In this study, I have examined how participation in the leisure activity of sports can promote and/or hinder inclusion for students in lower secondary school. The study focuses on transferable elements from sports to inclusion in school, and I explore this through Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory and Qvortrup & Qvortrup`s dimensions of inclusion. The study has phenomenological approach where students’ experiences and perceptions of the phenomenon are central for the study and I, as the researcher, have interpreted and analyzed their experiences. The method used is focus group interviews, where I interviewed three groups with four students in each group. The groups consisted of representatives from the 10th grade and included both genders. The results show that the social bonds and communities formed in sports are transferred and promote inclusion in school. These communities allow students to experience familiar, social and safe relationships, which enhance their well-being and social belonging in school. Additionally, the communication and cooperation skills that team sports particularly bring, are identified as inclusive factors in school. The study also highlights challenges related to inclusion in school. The focus on performance and established student environments transferred from sports make it difficult for students to be included in social networks, which hinders inclusion in school. Based on Bronfenbrenner’s theory of social systems and Qvortrup & Qvortrup`s dimensions of inclusion, it is essential for teachers to be aware of the challenges that sports may bring. Sports can both promote and hinder inclusion in school, and knowledge in this field is therefore significant for school staff.
