Abstract

Background: Emotional competence is important for children and young people's development and social adaptation. In the school health service, public health nurses have a central role in promoting emotional awareness and coping through health dialogue and teaching. This master's thesis examines the experiences of public health nurses with using Hjerteskala, a visual and tactile conversation tool, in health promotion work with children and young people. Theory: In this study, health promotion work with children and young people is seen in light of Aaron Antonovsky's theory of Sense of Coherence (SOC). Method: The study is based on a qualitative methodological approach with focus group interviews and individual, semi-structured in-depth interviews. The analysis was carried out using reflexive thematic analysis. The sample consisted of public health nurses from different municipalities, with varying experience in using the Hjerteskala. Result: The tool is experienced as simple, concrete and flexible, and suitable for strengthening emotional reflection and building relations with children. It promotes children's ability to express and regulate emotions, and is used in both individual conversations, parental collaboration and interdisciplinary contexts. The simplicity is considered a strength, but also a potential weakness if the tool is used without professional reflection and adaptation. Increased awareness is required, especially when working with older students and children with complex needs. Conclusion: The Hjerteskala has the potential to strengthen public health nurses' health promotion work by supporting children's emotional development and Sense of Coherence. This requires a conscious and relational use of the tool, adapted to the child's needs and context.
