Samarbeidsprøver i matematikk: Formativ vurdering

Samarbeidsprøver i matematikk: Formativ vurdering

Abstract

Background: Well-being in Norwegian schools is generally high. Nevertheless, there are some students who have negative experiences with school. For many, mathematics can be perceived as difficult. Students who experience little mastery in mathematics easily give up when they encounter resistance and thus struggle to improve academically. For many, assessments in mathematics are experienced as very stressful and are associated with a low degree of mastery. Experiments with collaborative tests have been shown to have a positive effect on stress and perceived mastery among students in mathematics. Purpose: In this thesis, I will examine what research has been done on collaborative assessments in mathematics in the past and how teaching can be structured to best prepare students for this form of assessment. I will discuss the following issue: How can collaborative tests help secondary school students achieve current curriculum goals in mathematics? Method: This thesis is a literature review that examines how collaborative tests can function as formative assessment in mathematics. Both Norwegian and international research on the topic is included in this study. I will present my findings and give some examples of tasks that can serve this purpose. Result: Collaborative tests in mathematics had a positive impact on students’ motivation for mathematics. Students were less stressed in assessment situations and experienced a greater degree of mastery. Students who used to give up, persevered longer when they worked with a partner. A prerequisite for good results is that students maintain the same academic level. It is also necessary to prepare students for this form of assessment in lessons, by planning and practicing collaboration during lesson time as well. Conclusion: Paired tests appear to be a formative assessment method that works well in mathematics. Students experience collaboration as rewarding. The ability to collaborate is an important skill that should be developed in school on a par with academic competence. Key words: cooperation, mathematics, assessment, motivation
