Kristendommen som løsning – eller som problem?

Kristendommen som løsning – eller som problem?

Abstract

This thesis looks at some aspects of Søren Kierkegaard and Friedrich Nietzsche's thinking about religion. It is argued, as the title of the thesis suggests, that Kierkegaard saw religion, specifically Christianity, as the solution to the human problem, while Nietzsche saw Christianity as the problem itself. Nietzsche's view of religion is more difficult to grasp, but it is problematic to establish that he was dismissive of all religion. The thesis is based on Kierkegaard's teachings on the stages of life, and looks at how these express a view of the important role of religion in human life. The discussion of Nietzsche is based on his criticism of Christianity, especially as expressed in his work The Antichrist. It is also pointed out that in places Nietzsche himself resembles a kind of founder of religion, where he launches an alternative view of reality intended to remedy the weaknesses of Christianity. The thesis shows that Kierkegaard and Nietzsche were both thinkers who saw man's interaction and struggle with religion, in particular Christianity, as central aspects of what it is to be human.
