In a time of increasing focus on sustainability and climate issues, it is essential to explore and adopt more renewable energy sources in the maritime industry in order to achieve lower emissions. This bachelor's thesis addresses the design of a modern and more sustainable coastal fishing vessel with an alternative propulsion system. The aim of this project has been to investigate whether it is technically feasible to design a coastal fishing vessel that can operate with lower emissions than comparable ships in today’s fleet. To answer this, a ship design concept has been developed, focusing on alternative energy carriers in the form of fuel cells combined with battery technology. The concept is based on technology that exists today or is expected to become available in the near future. The project follows a structured design process that includes evaluation of energy solutions, concept development, hull design, weight and stability calculations, and resistance analysis. In addition, fishing and deck equipment have been selected based on technical comparisons and industry standards. Throughout the work, several assessments have been necessary, including considerations of technical feasibility, energy efficiency, and space utilization. The choice of methanol as the energy carrier is based on both practical and technical evaluations. The result is a concept for a forward-looking coastal fishing vessel that combines environmentally friendly solutions with modern technology. The thesis also identifies areas that require further development if the vessel is to be realized in practice.
